Snowden-Symons Junior Challenge Shield to be played at Colac

The Junior Golfers from South Western Golf Association and Western District Golf Association will play for a newly struck Challenge Shield to be played between the 2 Districts in conjunction with the Craig Spence Cup at the Colac Junior Tournament on Sunday October 21st.

The Snowden-Symons Shield is named after 2 incredible contributors to the respective Associations, John Snowden & Steve Symons.

John was first elected to the Board of the Corangamite District GA in 1980 and remains a current board member of the amalgamated Western District GA. John has served as a District Match Committee member for the same period and has traveled with Junior Regions and Men’s Country Week teams for the last 35 years.

He served as a Victorian Golf Association Country Councillor from 1999-2012 and as a Rules Official at many Australian Opens all around the country and closer to home at the Victorian Open.

At Club level John has served on the committee of Mortlake Golf Club since 1974 in many roles including Committee, Secretary, Captain and President and stills spends many hours working as a volunteer on course.

In contrast to John’s amazing service to the game as an administrator Steve has built an extraordinary on course resume since taking up the game in 1983.

Steve is a 12 time District Champion in the South Western Golf Association (formerly Geelong District GA) taking home 3 Junior Championships followed by 9 Men’s Championships which is one short of the long standing record of 10. He is the current holder of that title after winning 2017 & 2018.

He has been a 17 time Club Champion winning 11 at East Geelong, 3 at Curlewis, 2 at Anglesea and 1 at Woodlands Golf Club who he represented in VGA Pennant.

Steve was Runner Up in the Victorian Amateur Championships in 1992 & 93, representing Victoria at the Men’s Interstate Series in 92, 93 and as Captain in 94.

He was Victorian Country Champion in 1996, 97 & 2006 and played on the Australian PGA Tour from 1997-1999.

To add to all that Steve has won 150 Opens and 12 Division 1 Pennant Titles and he’s not done yet as he is still a threat in any any event he plays.
