Women’s Winner and Trophy Origins
Jean Russell Salver
This trophy began in 1979 when it was decided that the SWDGA Championship event was becoming too crowded to limit just to pennant players; so the Executive decided to have the second day Canadian Foursomes and to open the Championship to all silver division players and club champions. In 1980 the executive decided to name the Canadian Foursomes the Jean Russell Salver and in 1989 it was made the pennant presentation day and separated from the Championship. The Jean Russell Salver was named for Mrs Russell, as her contribution to the SWDGA was quite considerable.
Mrs. Russell was Torquay delegate for several years; President of SWDGA in 1968 and became Secretary in 1970 a position she held until 1984; was Treasurer in 1985 and in 1986 Mrs. Russell was named the 2nd Life Member of the SWDLGA an honour which thrilled her greatly. Mrs. Russell died in 2000.

Joye Burton Salver
This event honours the work of Joye Burton, who after being a delegate since 1985 became a member of the SWDLGA committee in 1989, the year in which the District became incorporated.
In 1990, Joye was given the position of Pennant Secretary, responsible for the administration of SWD Pennant which then comprised 6 divisions, 2 divisions of 30- 36 and Sunday Pennant a position she held for 16 years. She then returned to become District Secretary from 2011 – 2013.
Joye’s service to the District expanded over the years; her exceptional skills with the computer enabled her to produce entry forms for SWD events, information books for SWD committee and ladies’ committees in the District clubs, score and team sheets for Pennant and Interclub and the much appreciated Pennant fixture books for players. Reports for Delegates and Annual General Meetings are now produced in book form – SWD is proud of and very grateful for the professional way in which our documentation is presented. Joye created a website in 2001 which was a first for a District.
As a golfer, Joye has been a dedicated and successful member of South Western’s Country Team and has represented her club, Torquay, in many events. She has also won a Torquay Championship, an East Geelong Championship, a District Foursomes Championship and 2 Betty Kernot Scratch Foursomes.
In 1999 a wind-up day for Sunday Pennant was inaugurated and in 2000 the event was renamed the ‘Joye Burton Salver’, with the unanimous support of the SWD committee. In 2006, Joye was made a Life Member in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the District.
Joye continued her service to the District with the ongoing input, for 16 years as SWDLGA website co-ordinator until amalgamation in 2016 to ‘South Western Golf Association’, when a new combined website was created.

Mandy Buckley Foursomes Championships
Initiated in 2002; originally pairs belonged to the same club; however this format was changed in 2008 to allow choice of partner from any club in the District.
This event honours the work of Mandy Buckley, who became a member of the SWDLGA committee in 1998 and who has so far given 20 consecutive years of service to the District in a variety of positions.
In 1999, Mandy was given the position of Match Chair, responsible for the administration of golf in the District. She did this for 7 years and then went on to become the Pennant Secretary from 2006-2009. After vacating the job of Pennant Secretary, she stayed on committee and the match committee until taking over as Pennant Secretary again in 2013, a position she holds presently.
Mandy’s service to the District expanded over the years; she was always a willing worker at the SW clinics, giving rules talks at clubs and helping in all sorts of ways with the administration of the District, including chairing the amalgamation sub-committee and writing the new constitution. She also spent years re-writing the history of SW. SWDLGA is very grateful for the professional way in which she handles all that she does, including the running of pennant.
As a golfer, Mandy has been a dedicated and successful member of South Western’s Country Team representing the District 21 times including captaining the side for 2 years. She has won the District Championship 8 times, won the District Foursomes Championship 3 times and has won the Betty Kernot 8 times. She has also represented her club, Torquay, in 9 winning Division 1 pennants, captaining the side in all. She has also won the Torquay Club Championship 24 times and was given the honour of captaining the Victorian State side in 2004-2005. In 2014 Mandy was made a Life Member of Torquay.
At the 2015 AGM, this event was renamed the ‘Mandy Buckley Foursomes Championship’, with the unanimous support of the SWD committee and Mandy was made a Life Member of SWDLGA in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the District.

Betty Kernott Scratch Foursomes
In 1971 Miss Kernot suggested this event and conditions were set down by her.
Originally the Handicap limit was: Combined lowest 20‑ No Highest but as competition improved limits were amended to: Combined lowest 20‑ highest 45. In 2011 it was amended to: Combined lowest 20- highest 50.
The Executive at that time, to her embarrassment, chose to name the event in her honour.
Miss Kernot was originally a Geelong delegate to the SWDGA and became President of the SWDGA in 1962 After her valuable contribution to the SWDGA in previous years the Committee saw fit in 1963 to appoint Miss Kernot PATRON, a position she held with great pride until she passed away in 1984.
Miss Kernot was a member of the VLGU Council; Australian Champion twice; captained several Victorian teams; holder of a VLGU Laurel Wreath Brooch; won SWDGA Championship six times; holder of several Royal Melbourne, Geelong and Barwon Heads Championships. She began and organised the first SWDGA Junior Clinic in 1963, which she held each school holidays for 13 years until 1976 when they lapsed through lack of girls available.

Championship - Audrey McKenzie Salver
The SWDGA Championship was first played for in 1933 over 18 Holes ‑ this continued until 1991 when it was altered to a 36 Hole Event played on one day. In 2003 changed again to a 27 hole event (The original Cup is still in use)
The first Champion Shirley Tolhurst won the Victorian Championship in 1934.
Until 1959 if a tie occurred, both names were engraved on the Cup, but from 1960 a play off (sudden death) took place.
The Audrey McKenzie Salver was presented to the winner of the 36 holes nett event at the SWD District Championship; changed to the winner of the 27 holes nett in 2003.
The event was inaugurated at the Annual General Meeting of the Association in 1999, in gratitude for the many years of sterling service to the South Western District given by Audrey McKenzie, a member of the Torquay Golf Club since 1958, who first became involved with SW as Delegate from Torquay in 1973 and then SW Committee as Vice president in 1976. In 1977, Audrey became President of what was then known as the South Western District Golf Association, a year which saw the number of clubs grow from ten to twelve with the inclusion of Clifton Springs and Queens Park. From 1985 to 1999 Audrey gave the District continuous service as District Treasurer. In this role she oversaw the finances of the Association, keeping every aspect, from the expenses of the Country Team to the raffle-money from District fund-raising under firm control. Audrey has also served as Lady Captain and President of her own club Torquay, and in 1995 was made a Life Member of Torquay.
The Committee of South Western felt that this Salver was a fitting recognition of Audrey’s outstanding contribution.
