Sunday Pennant
Joye Burton Salver
This event honours the work of Joye Burton, who after being a delegate since 1985 became a member of the SWDLGA committee in 1989, the year in which the District became incorporated.
In 1990, Joye was given the position of Pennant Secretary, responsible for the administration of SWD Pennant which then comprised 6 divisions, 2 divisions of 30- 36 and Sunday Pennant a position she held for 16 years. She then returned to become District Secretary from 2011 – 2013.
Joye’s service to the District expanded over the years; her exceptional skills with the computer enabled her to produce entry forms for SWD events, information books for SWD committee and ladies’ committees in the District clubs, score and team sheets for Pennant and Interclub and the much appreciated Pennant fixture books for players. Reports for Delegates and Annual General Meetings are now produced in book form – SWD is proud of and very grateful for the professional way in which our documentation is presented. Joye created a website in 2001 which was a first for a District.
As a golfer, Joye has been a dedicated and successful member of South Western’s Country Team and has represented her club, Torquay, in many events. She has also won a Torquay Championship, an East Geelong Championship, a District Foursomes Championship and 2 Betty Kernot Scratch Foursomes.
In 1999 a wind-up day for Sunday Pennant was inaugurated and in 2000 the event was renamed the ‘Joye Burton Salver’, with the unanimous support of the SWD committee. In 2006, Joye was made a Life Member in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the District.
Joye continued her service to the District with the ongoing input, for 16 years as SWDLGA website co-ordinator until amalgamation in 2016 to ‘South Western Golf Association’, when a new combined website was created.
